A family business, now in its third generation
Cheltenham Surfacing Company Limited is a great example of a family business, now in its third generation, which has grown and gained a reputation second to none. It was originally formed by Ronald Moore in 1959 (who had previously been working on a self-employed basis) and is now celebrating its 50th year. Ronnie recognised the need for a professional and quality tarmac business in an industry which has at times suffered from a transient workforce, often giving a less than satisfactory service. Cheltenham Surfacing Company Limited rapidly gained an enviable reputation for its quality. Just as Ronnie was forming a limited company, his son John Moore, then 21, joined him in the business. Ronnie was already planning for succession and John quickly gained experience in the
business from the bottom up, from going out with the gangs laying tarmac to becoming more and more involved in the sales, estimation and management side of the business. John developed well under the guidance of Ronnie and after Ronnie’s death in 1971 he was well placed to continue running the company. John continued to build up the business alone until 1978, when his son, Stephen Moore, joined him straight from school. Stephen gradually moved through the various roles within the business, eventually becoming a director in 1992. John and Stephen continued to work well together growing the business until 1998, when John formally handed over the reins to his son Stephen. The business has continued to grow in strength and has successfully diversified into property development, as well as continuing to service its core markets of surfacing driveways, roads, tennis courts and sports surfaces. Such is the excellent reputation of the company that when ex-Formula One racing driver Nigel Mansell was building his kart racing circuit near Honiton, rather than choose a local surfacing company Nigel chose to use Cheltenham Surfacing.
"It is fantastic to see that a business now well into its third generation has has lost none of its enthusiasm."
“The understanding that Stephen brings to the business, having served in all of its roles, is incredible and he has lost none of his drive to improve the business, a notable achievement being the gaining of an ISO 9001 quality assurance standard. Despite difficult times in the construction industry at the moment, Cheltenham Surfacing is a solid company that has built up through three generations and is strong enough to survive this recession. “
